Squeal on light braking
Often the built-in wear indicator. It means the pads are getting thin, not that they have failed.
Grinding or scraping
The friction material is gone. Rotors are now being damaged, which adds to the cost every mile.
A longer pedal
Air, a leak or worn fluid can all make the pedal travel further. Get it checked before the next descent.
Vibration when stopping
Usually uneven rotor surfaces, common after hard braking on long grades.
The car darts to one side
A sticking caliper or a collapsed hose makes one wheel brake harder than the other.
What the brake job involves
Every wheel is checked: pad thickness, rotor thickness against the minimum stamped on it, caliper slides and seals, hoses and lines. Brake fluid is tested for water content, because wet fluid boils on long downhill runs and the pedal fades.
The quote then tells you exactly what each axle needs. Sometimes it is pads alone. Sometimes the rotors are below minimum and have to be replaced. Either way, you know before any work starts.
After the work, the pads are bedded in on a road test so they grip evenly from the first week. You also get a note of how much life is left on anything that did not need replacing yet.
What your quote will list
- Pads or pads and rotors, per axle
- Caliper or hose replacement if one is sticking or leaking
- Brake fluid exchange if the test shows moisture
- A road test to bed in the new pads
Covered after the repair
Brake work we carry out is covered for 12 months or 12,000 miles. If a problem with the repair shows up inside that period, bring the vehicle back and it is put right.
Useful details for the call
Say which corner the noise seems to come from and whether it happens on every stop or mainly the first few of the day. Mention any trips with long descents coming up, so we know how soon the work matters.
If the vehicle is used for towing or regularly carries heavy loads down the canyon, say so. It changes which pad compound makes sense and how soon the rotors are likely to need attention again.
Questions about this repair
Can rotors be resurfaced instead of replaced?
Sometimes, if there is enough thickness left above the minimum. Many modern rotors are thin from new, so replacement is often the better value. The measurement decides, and you see the reasoning in the quote.
How long does a typical brake job take?
Pads on one axle is usually a short job. Adding rotors, calipers or a fluid exchange adds time. You get a time estimate with the price.
Why do my brakes smell after a long downhill?
Heavy, sustained braking overheats pads and rotors. Using a lower gear helps. If the smell appears on short, flat trips, a caliper may be dragging and needs checking.
